Child & SEND Practical Tools

Children do not always have the words for what is happening.

These six printable resources help children notice body signals, communicate what they need, manage change and recognise what supports them.

They can be used at home, in school or alongside a trusted adult. Children can write, draw, point, choose or simply use the pages to begin a conversation.

There is no single right way to use them.

Inside the Pack

Each resource includes two child-facing pages and a short guidance page for the adult alongside them.

They are not tests, behaviour charts or another demand for children to explain themselves on the spot. They are practical ways to notice, communicate and find what might help.

Use Them Where They Are Needed

At Home

Use the pages to notice patterns, prepare for changes and help children communicate what they need without turning it into an interrogation.

At School

Use them during quieter moments to understand body clues, sensory needs, communication preferences and what may help before pressure builds.

In Support Settings

Use them as practical conversation tools with children and families across SEND services, community groups and family support work.

A Note Before You Use Them

These resources support everyday communication, understanding and regulation.
They do not replace a child’s individual medical, occupational therapy, speech and language, educational or safeguarding advice.

Use what is helpful. Adapt the language where needed. Never force a child to complete a page or explain themselves while they are distressed

Looking for Support Beyond the Download?

A resource can help a child or adult begin to notice what is happening. Sometimes it is also useful to practise the tools together.

I Am Well offers practical, SEND-inclusive wellbeing sessions for children, parents, carers, schools, family services and community groups. Sessions are adapted around the people taking part and what would be genuinely useful when they leave.
